What to Do When Worry Keeps You Awake

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with your mind racing, trying to come up with all the answers for problems you hadn’t even considered in the light of day? You’re wide awake as worry takes over, and you start asking: What if this happens? How will I handle this? Why did I do that? All these questions seem to demand an immediate answer when there is nothing you can do about any of them at three o’clock in the morning.

For a long time, I thought I had finally conquered those insomnia-inducing worry sessions, but lately they’re back!

Last night, as I lay in bed once again with my mind spiraling, it struck me that I was not practicing what I preach. I always write about how God is sufficient, and we need to trust Him completely in every situation of our life, and here I was trying to solve all my problems on my own in the middle of the night.

So, I reached for my phone. Not to doomscroll on social media, but to open the Bible app. And as I filled my mind with His word, I was quickly reminded that I need to replace all the “what ifs” keeping me awake with the hope-filled truth: “God’s got this!”

None of the pesky worries I was trying to tackle could get sorted out when the rest of the world is asleep. I needed to surrender them all to God!

When Jesus says not to worry about tomorrow, it’s because He knows tomorrow is a place we have no control over. As much as we may plan, plot, and prepare, we don’t know what tomorrow holds or what we’ll need when we get there. But God does! And He will always faithfully provide what we need, when we need it.

If worry is keeping you awake at night, and counting sheep doesn’t help because you can’t count that high, open God’s Word. Allow His promises to replace your worries, and every time you’re tempted to solve tomorrow’s problems when you’re supposed to be asleep, confidently declare:

“God’s got this!”
