We need the Word of God!

The Christian life cannot be lived apart from the Word of God. Jesus knew and trusted the Word of God, and if we want to live as Christ-followers, we must do the same. As a young boy, Jesus sat among the teachers to hear the Word of God. (Luke 2:42-52) In the synagogue, He read aloud from the Word of God. (Luke 4:14-21) He used the Word of God to gain victory during His time of testing in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-11) And He told those that were following Him that He had come to fulfill the Word of God and that everything written in it would be accomplished. (Matthew 5:17-19)

For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. – Matthew 5:18

The Word of God is filled with precepts, promises, proverbs, prophecies, and principles. It is the ultimate rule book, self-help book, instruction manual, and love letter all wrapped up in one. It tells us history and future, without error. It is the autobiography of our Creator, showing us who He is and how He works.

There’s a passage in Psalm 19 that reads like a bullet point list of why the Bible is crucial for our lives:

  • It is His perfect and flawless law that restores and refreshes our soul.
  • It is His trustworthy rules for life that give us wisdom.
  • It is His right direction that brings us joy.
  • It is His clear commands that give us insight for living life.

God’s laws are true and fair and more desirable than gold. They are sweeter than honey and a great reward for anyone who obeys them.

There are so many things flooding our minds and souls today. A steady stream of bad news, hateful rhetoric, and misinformation. We need to be restored and refreshed. We need wisdom and insight. We need joy. We need the Word of God. Read the Bible. Study the Bible. Memorize the Bible. Allow the Word of God to be all that He intends for it to be in your life.

For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12

  1. I was meditating on this point this week, too! I wrote about it differently in the post I published yesterday, but it was for the same reason. There is an absolute abundance of information available today and it’s so hard to separate truth from lies or even incorrect information. We need to go to the only place where our truth never wavers not can waver. Nice post!
