When the Israelites packed up and left Egypt, they thought they had seen the last of the Egyptians, but Pharoah wasn’t giving up that easily. God hardened his heart, and he changed his mind and came after them. When they saw the army closing in, they panicked and started grumbling about how they should’ve just stayed in captivity. They completely forgot the power God had displayed to set them free. Apparently, the ten miraculous plagues hadn’t been enough to convince them that God’s got this.
Sometimes the strongholds we break free from come after us again. The enemy assaults us with temptation and manages to make the memories of our captivity look better than the reality of our freedom. The thought of facing off against them again seems harder than just giving in and going back.
“It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” Exodus 14:12 CSB
Stay the course. Remember how good freedom feels.
When the Israelites cried out to Moses about the encroaching Egyptian army, they turned their freedom into a death sentence. They thought they were doomed. They thought God saved them just so He could let them die in the wilderness. So Moses gave them a pep talk to remind them of who God is.
Maybe you need a pep talk today. Maybe your freedom is being threatened and you’re tempted to give in. Moses’ declaration to God’s people then is true for you today:
“Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today…The Lord Himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” – Exodus 14:13-14 NLT
Don’t worry, God’s got this! He brought you this far and He will sustain you. Focus on His faithfulness in the past and face your strongholds with confidence.
