I love home makeover shows. It’s incredible to see a broken-down old house transformed into a beautiful new home and to follow along and as the transformation unfolds one day at a time. The before and after pictures always blow my mind.
Something similar happens to us when we surrender our life to Jesus. He comes in and tears down walls, rewires our electrical system, and brightens things up with a fresh coat of paint. When we say “yes” to Jesus, the remodeling process begins and day by day we are being renewed and transformed into His image.
Jesus’ followers were transformed and empowered.
When you read the book of Acts*, you see the transformation of people who encountered Jesus. He left behind a rag-tag group of disciples who left everything to follow Him. For three years they walked with Him, listened to Him, and watched Him perform miracles. They were devastated when He was murdered and elated when He rose again. They thought since He had revealed Himself in the resurrection it was time for Him to take His earthly throne.
But Jesus said not yet. There was important work to be done first. He was leaving, but He would not leave them on their own. He would send the Holy Spirit to empower them to be His witnesses to the world. This group of misfits was about to be transformed into people who would proclaim the name of Jesus no matter the cost.
The same transformation power is available to you!
The Holy Spirit was not just for the early Church. Everyone who puts their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord is sealed with the Holy Spirit.
In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory. – Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV
On your own, you are unable to live a life that glorifies God. The Holy Spirit empowers you and encourages you. He reveals the truth to you through the Word of God. He gives you gifts to serve the Lord with and fruit in your life to make you more and more like Jesus.
In Christ, you are on your own remodel journey. It doesn’t happen overnight, but as you submit to the Holy Spirit, the transformation will unfold moment by moment and day by day.
Follow along as I study the book of Acts.
*The book of Acts picks up where the gospels (the letters about Jesus’ earthly life) left off. It starts with Jesus’ final moments on earth, then launches into the story of the beginning of the Church. Acts was written by Dr. Luke, a Gentile physician who also wrote the gospel of Luke. He wrote these books to provide an accurate historical record of the life and times of Jesus and the beginning of His Church.
