The aroma of Christ

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. – 2 Corinthians 2:14

I must confess! I have totally jumped on the Essential Oil bandwagon.  I am regularly diffusing different scents throughout my home, so when I read this verse I instantly got a picture in my head of what this means.  A diffuser is an excellent way to disperse a pleasant scent throughout a room.  You just fill it with water, add a few drops of oil and turn it on.  Instantly you will see a stream of mist floating up into the air and a pleasant aroma will fill the room.

As Christ followers, we are like a diffuser.  When we accepted Christ as our Savior, we were filled with the Holy Spirit. The pleasant aroma we are diffusing is the knowledge of God and the truth of the gospel. If we’re functioning like we’re supposed to be, then any room that we’re in should be filled with the aroma of Christ.

For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. – 2 Corinthians 2:15

Of course, not everyone likes the smell of oils being diffused in a room.  It is the same way with the aroma of Christ in us. Some people will be drawn to it and will be eager to experience the life giving eternal Salvation that Jesus offers.  But others will find the smell offensive and will turn their noses up to it and to us.  We can’t control how someone will respond to the knowledge of God, all we can do is be a Spirit-filled conduit through which it can flow.

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. – Psalm 96:3
