I love the story of Daniel and I have often asked God to help me to “resolve” like Daniel did. Taken captive and dragged off to a land where so many of the customs were contrary to what Daniel knew to be right in God’s eyes, he “determined not to defile himself”. (Daniel 1:8) His steadfast determination to live in a way that honored God brought him the respect of people and the blessing of God.
At one point jealous people set out to prove him guilty of something, but because of his choice to be different, they were unable to do so.
Then the other administrators and high officers began searching for some fault in the way Daniel was handling government affairs, but they couldn’t find anything to criticize or condemn. He was faithful, always responsible, and completely trustworthy. (Daniel 6:4 NLT)
I like that the Bible specifically mentioned three important parts of Daniel’s character. He was faithful. He was always responsible. He was completely trustworthy.
Today’s society seems to be saturated with an attitude that says: “Me first. Win at all costs.” But imagine if enough of us resolved to be different. If we set out to live out those traits in our lives, it could be contagious. It could make an impact.
If we determine that we will be faithful in our marriages; dependable in our jobs; devoted to our families; genuine in our friendships…
If we decide to be responsible with our resources; in control of our choices; accountable to God…
If we choose to be trustworthy in our commitments; credible with our word; honest in our actions…
If we commit to living honorable lives, we will earn the respect of others and God will be glorified.
It is God’s will that by doing good, you might cure the ignorance of the fools who think you’re a danger to society. Exercise your freedom by serving God, not by breaking the rules. Treat everyone you meet with dignity. (1 Peter 2:15-16 MSG)
