Invisible Army

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the story about the prophet Elisha and one of his servants when they were facing capture by an opposing army. (2 Kings 6:13-17) As soon as they received word that a strong force had surrounded the city, the servant panicked.  “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” He asked Elisha.

Elisha responded by telling him not to be afraid because they had an army of their own. Then he asked God to reveal His saving power.

“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”

Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see.” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.

2 Kings 6:16-17

There are two things I love about this story. First of all, I love that Elisha was not worried. Despite the fact that a strong force was coming to capture him, he knew that The Lord had it covered. Even though it appeared that they were severely outnumbered, Elisha knew that God had an entire army ready to fight for them.

Secondly, I love how God was gracious enough to allow the servant to see the army He had provided. The servant was struggling in the faith department and he had let his immediate circumstances convince him he was doomed. God revealed His power even though the servant had failed to have faith.

The Bible tells us that our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world. (Ephesians 6:12) The battles that come our way may come in human form, but they are being orchestrated by the devil, the evil ruler of this world. Yet, try as he might, he has cannot beat us.  We have more power on our side than the devil does on his. God has the victory; and in Him, so do we!
