Freedom and deliverance have been on my mind a lot lately. They are such an incredible part of salvation. Jesus’ death and resurrection give us eternal victory over death and that is the most amazing thing, but that’s not all. Along with eternal salvation comes freedom and deliverance. In Christ, we are saved and set free! This is a reality the devil wants to distract us from. So many of us find ourselves saved but still stuck. Stuck in cycles of defeat and despair, captive to our strongholds. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
Throughout the Old Testament, we see the Israelites, God’s people, stuck in their own cycles of defeat and despair. One day rescued, redeemed, and rejoicing, and the next, backsliding, broken and bound. Every time I read their story, I shake my head because I can relate to their stubbornness and desperate need for God.
Deliverance then and deliverance today!
The book of Exodus is the true story of God’s incredible deliverance of His people from slavery in Egypt. They were stuck in captivity, but God showed up to set them free. This story is full of principles we can apply to our lives today. It is a reminder of who God is and what He will do for His people when they surrender to Him. The deliverance of the Israelites is part of a much bigger story of deliverance woven throughout Scripture, and we can learn much from this historical account of God’s people.
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope. – Romans 15:4 ESV
As I study the book of Exodus, I see God’s amazing deliverance unfold for the Israelites then as it has in my life today. If you are struggling with strongholds, follow along and see how our God intervenes to make freedom a reality for His people.
Lord, I can so relate with your people, the Israelites. Captivity. Wilderness wanderings. Stubbornness. Regret, repent, repeat. And I take comfort in reflecting on your dealings with them. You are a good Father. A patient Father with good plans for your children. The theme of deliverance and salvation found in Exodus is repeated throughout Your Word, throughout world history, and throughout my life. Heavenly Father, as I study Exodus help me to comprehend your mighty acts of deliverance so I can live in freedom today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
