Have you ever wondered if you would’ve handled the first human temptation differently than Adam and Eve? They were in perfect fellowship with their Creator. He had given them everything wonderful their minds could conceive when along comes the crafty serpent with his tasty temptation. Suddenly, Eve’s focus shifted from all the amazing things God had given her to the one thing He had told her to stay away from. She allowed the devil to convince her there was something more. That somehow God was holding out on her.
Mankind falling short of God’s holy standard began the moment Adam and Eve disobeyed Him in the garden. Their sin was passed down to all of us, not just because they sinned but because we all do. It’s easy to suppose we’d have handled it differently, but we wouldn’t have. Our free-will combined with our flesh are a recipe for sin. We prove that to be true every day when we miss the mark in one way or another.
“Sin is a deep discrepancy between who we are and who we were created to be.”
After Adam and Eve sinned in the garden. After the world was wiped out with the flood. After Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph led God’s people. Then God gave The Law through Moses. When the law came, it did not suddenly wipe out sin. It simply shined a light on it.
The Law revealed sin, but it offered no remedy.
For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. – Romans 3:20 NLT
The Law provides the holy goal, and perfect obedience is God’s righteous expectation. On our own, we are not capable of being made right in God’s sight through The Law because we are incapable of obeying it perfectly. But thank God He provided the perfect remedy. The only remedy!
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.” – John 3:16-17 ESV
The Law revealed sin. Jesus revealed grace!
