Beware of Algorithms & Echo Chambers

I can’t help but think of algorithms and echo chambers when I read this passage of Scripture: For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

There is no shortage of “teachers” online today. Social media is filled with wannabe theologians opining to gain popularity instead of carefully and prayerfully studying the Word of God. They tickle people’s ears to gain likes and follows, and the metaverse reinforces it by creating algorithms that feed you more of what you want to hear. It’s a system that creates a dangerous echo chamber where sound teaching is absent and myths become reality. And now AI has been thrown into the mix, and many assume that everything this soulless resource spits out is the truth.

How can you avoid getting sucked into a biased blackhole filled with deception? Keep your Bible open!

The Word of God should be your first source of truth. You should test everything you hear against what God actually says. Pray for discernment and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. Be part of a church where the Bible is preached. Read some commentaries by old school Bible scholars whose teachings have stood the test of time. Your theology must be based on more than snippets and soundbites.

Truth is not relative. It does not care what makes us cozy and comfortable. And God isn’t keeping it from us. He has given us His Word so we can know the truth and be sanctified by it. Don’t fall prey to echo chambers and algorithms. Stay grounded in the Word of God.
